From the 21 names submitted to the HLFM as part of a naming contest for the F.I. osprey that will soon be “tagged” with a transmitter, the name “Edwin” has been chosen to honor the late Edwin H. Horning (1919-2008), beloved teacher, naturalist and former curator of the HLFM.

The name was submitted by Sarah Rose who wrote:

“Mr. Horning assisted generations of Fishers Islanders to see the natural world around them and was so important to the life of the museum.  It would be lovely to honor him when naming the osprey.”

She also mentioned that when picking the name she immediately thought of how excited Mr. Horning would be to track the birds on their southern route.

Sarah has asked that the prize, a pair of Nikon birding binoculars, be kept at the HLFM and used by participants in the HLFM’s Thursday afternoon nature walks. Our thanks go to Sarah and to all who participated in this naming contest.

The Tagging Project is funded by a generous grant from the Spofford foundation.
