Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
Invasive Plant Removal
Invasive plants like privet, porcelain berry, and glossy buckthorn crowd out plants that are native to Fishers Island. The impacts of this ripple throughout the entire ecosystem, making it essential to work to remove these species wherever they are found. You’ll walk the trails and visit other Land Trust properties to cut vines, pull stems, and cover troublesome plants.
Trail Steward
The HLFM Land Trust maintains fifteen trails located all over the Island. These trails are maintained to keep them clear for all to enjoy. You’ll walk the trails with loppers or hand snips to cut back overhanging branches and scout for problems requiring more attention, like downed trees.
Native Plant Garden
The native plant garden, located behind the H. Lee Ferguson, Jr. Wildlife Sanctuary, nurtures seedlings that will be used in Land Trust restoration projects across the Island. You’ll tend the garden, planting seeds, weeding and de-vining the raised beds and nearby plantings, and potting seedlings.
Citizen Science
Fishers Island is a refuge for many threatened or rare species. Learning more about these plants and animals provides valuable information that can be used to protect them. You’ll visit different sites around the Island to locate and document specific plants, survey dragonflies, or look for nesting shorebirds. There are many small projects that are ongoing in this category, so let us know if you have specific interests!
