Portraits of the Year-Round Community
by Matt Kaelin

Soon after photographer Matt Kaelin first came to Fishers Island in fall 2016, he began an ambitious project to photograph members of the year-round community. What started slowly grew exponentially as his circle of friends and acquaintances expanded. Between 2016 and 2023, Kaelin made more than 100 portraits of Islanders using an 8”x10” large-format camera; 50 of these remarkably personal images are featured in this exhibition. Kaelin’s photographs are displayed on the Museum’s 1st and 2nd floors, as well as in the stairway between them.

As a thank-you to the island community,
Fishers Island year-round residents attending the reception will receive a complimentary copy of Matt Kaelin’s book, Inventory of the Impermanent, while supplies last, limited to one copy per household.

Through the end of 2026, those whose portrait appears in the book or exhibition,
and who haven’t already received a complimentary copy may pick one up at the Museum,
also limited to one copy per household.

The 2026 Exhibition is generously sponsored by Altus Partners.

THE SKETCHBOOKS OF CHARLIE FERGUSON

In the full sweep of Fishers Island’s history, there is no artist more synonymous, more closely associated with Fishers Island than Charles B. “Charlie” Ferguson. The main show features images from two of Charlie's sketchbooks which functioned as illustrated diaries that were filled with daily activities, nature observations, personal notes, and lots of art—drawings, sketches, and watercolors—in various states of completion.
