We’ll embark from the Fishers Island Ferry Dock, cruising to some of our island’s most vibrant eelgrass locations. Marvel at the beauty of eelgrass from the boat and uncover the unique qualities that define these vital ecosystems.
As you enjoy breakfast on board, Dr. Vaudrey will share insights about the importance of eelgrass to the Long Island Sound ecosystem and the challenges it faces. Learn to identify and distinguish these remarkable plants from salt marsh grasses, widgeon grass, and seaweed. Explore the innovative methods scientists are using to restore and protect Long Island Sound eelgrass!

About Our Speaker:
Jamie Vaudrey, Ph.D.
Dr. Vaudrey is a trailblazer in the fascinating world of coastal ecosystem dynamics! With a passion for exploring how land use affects the coastal environment, she dives deep into the intricate relationship between human activities and eutrophication in both expansive systems like Narragansett Bay and smaller embayments. Her enthusiasm for seagrass systems is infectious; she sees them not only as indicators of pristine water quality but also as crucial players in maintaining vibrant coastal ecosystems.
With a wealth of experience from multiple seagrass projects throughout New England, she’s making waves by assessing genetic diversity in eelgrass, evaluating restoration projects, and crafting innovative models that pave the way for successful restoration efforts.
Dr. Vaudrey’s academic journey is impressive—she earned her B.A. in Biology with a minor in Philosophy from Wellesley College, MA, followed by a Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Connecticut. Currently, as a research faculty member in the Department of Marine Sciences at UConn, she plays a pivotal role in establishing a National Estuarine Research Reserve in Connecticut, which has already made a significant impact since its opening in July 2022.
