A Cooper’s hawk stalks a sparrow at the Middle Farms Osprey Nest
On the afternoon of September 5, 2026, a sparrow returned to its nest below the Middle Farms osprey nest. Soon after a Cooper’s hawk landed and stalked the sparrow. Since osprey feed almost exclusively on fish, they are no threat to the much smaller sparrows during spring and summer months. The osprey aggressively defend the nest from other raptors during this time, but once the osprey abandon the nest for the season – the sparrows lose their protectors.
On September 26, 2026, during the weekend nor’easter, a drenched Cooper’s hawk was spotted hunting at the osprey nest.
