Did You Know? You can walk on Museum trails that run contiguously from the south side of the island to the north?
The 2019 Pocket Guidebook details 10 different nature trails maintained within the 350 acres of open space protected by the Museum’s Land Trust. The Trail Guide includes one large map showing the locations of 10 trails from the East End to the West End of Fishers Island. Ten smaller individual maps provide detailed descriptions of the different trails in the system along with wildlife illustrations by the late Charles B. “Charlie” Ferguson.
The guidebook tells you where to park your bike or car, how to access each trail and what types of flora and fauna you might see while you explore the different ecosystems and wildlife habitats that each trail offers. Through quiet woodlands, open meadows, coastal and inland terrain you’ll see birds and wildflowers, tall grasses and graceful trees. You might hear the hoot of a Great Horned Owl, witness a Great Blue Heron catching its dinner or simply experience the stillness of a nature preserve. The new Trail Guide will inspire you to explore the incredible natural beauty of our beloved island.
Be sure to take time to visit the Museum’s newest Land Trust acquisition with a walk on the Chocomount Cove Sanctuary Trail. Jump across the main road and meet up with the Chocomount Trail and you’ll enjoy views of Fishers Island Sound, Block Island Sound and the serene woodlands in between, all in one trip to the trails.
