As the winter turns to spring, and the thawing fie As the winter turns to spring, and the thawing fields turn to mud beneath the wheels of the Museum's tractor as it clears the brush from the Middle Farms burn, we celebrate the vernal equinox - the first day of spring. The sun is exactly over the equator today, meaning the Earth's axis is not tilted toward or away from the sun, causing roughly an equal amount of sunlight and dark hours at all latitudes. The vernal equinox is traditionally seen as a time of celebration and rebirth, a symbol of the return of spring after a long winter. And spring has certainly returned here on Fishers Island. Crocuses are beginning to poke up out of the ground and unfurl, as are buds on plants like highbush blueberry and maple trees. The lengthening of daylight hours and warming of soil temperatures signal plants to wake from their dormancy and make new growth. As Jack Schneider, our Land Trust Stewardship Manager, can attest to, this warming soil slowly thaws from top to bottom, preventing water from draining down and leading to some muddy conditions. Keep an eye out for more seasonal changes near you as spring gets into full swing!

‘Between Land and Sea: The Atlantic Coast and th ‘Between Land and Sea: The Atlantic Coast and the Transformation of New England.’

Please join us this Sunday, March 9 @ 4PM for a VIRTUAL-ONLY illustrated talk by Christopher L. Pastore, author and Assistant Professor of History at the University at Albany, State University of New York.

Pastore will present an environmental history of Narragansett Bay, one of the largest estuaries on the North Atlantic coast. By draining swamps, damming rivers, and digging canals, settlers transformed a marshy coastal margin into a clearly defined edge. The resultant “coastline” proved less resilient, less able to absorb the blows of human initiative and natural variation than the soggy fractal of water and earth it replaced. Today, as sea levels rise and superstorms batter coasts with increasing ferocity, ‘Between Land and Sea’ calls on the environmentally-minded to make a space in their notions of progress for impermanence and uncertainty in the natural world.

…And the tide went out. There were some extremel …And the tide went out. There were some extremely low tides on Fishers Island this week, lower than many Fishers Islanders can ever recall seeing. Several days of near gale force winds out of the west, gusting up to 55 mph, are thought to be a major contributing factor. The strong winds traveled down Long Island Sound uninterrupted, pushing the topwater in front of it out of the sound and into the Atlantic, draining harbors and coves temporarily and leaving us with the remarkable pictures you see here.

Thank you to Todd McCormack, David Burnham, Mike Ahlgren, and Molly Malinowski for the great shots.

We are collecting additional photos and videos - please send them to info@fergusonmuseum.org if you have any.

Hello to a new West Harbor visitor! We believe thi Hello to a new West Harbor visitor! We believe this to be a common dolphin, one of 32 known species of these toothed whales. Dolphins can be identified by the elongated jaws that form their ‘beaks’, inside of which are cone-shaped teeth used for grasping and trapping prey before swallowing it whole. They are leaner and longer than porpoises, averaging 6 to 12 feet in length. This one appears alone but usually where you find one dolphin, you will find many. Let us know if you see any more!

Thank you, Fishers Island! Over 50 wonderful folks Thank you, Fishers Island! Over 50 wonderful folks gathered at 2 PM on Friday at the Museum for the 19th Annual HLFM Trail Clearing and Beach Cleanup. The Museum’s Land Trust manages over 377 acres of undeveloped Fishers Island land, and your help is essential as we maintain, protect and restore these pristine natural areas. Things kicked off with hot cider and donuts, and Board Member Scott Reid gave a great overview of the Museum’s work to conserve and preserve Fishers Island for future generations, built on the foundation of over 60 years of institutional knowledge and current sustainable practices. All Museum trails and beaches were attended to by at least one group and fun was had by all on a glorious day where our trail network and the broader community collectively shined together. We hope to see you again next year—and the Annual Oyster Afterparty will return as well!

It was a Happy Thanksgiving indeed for sailors and It was a Happy Thanksgiving indeed for sailors and fishermen alike when the Fishers Island Life-Saving Station crew first reported for duty on Thanksgiving Day, 1904. The station was built near East Harbor on the narrow neck of the island to allow surfmen access to both the north and south shores. It remained there until the 1950s, when the Coast Guard Station moved to its most recent location on Silver Eel Cove.

Happy Thanksgiving, and we hope to see you at the Trail Clearing event tomorrow--2 PM sharp at the Museum.

F.I. Sketchbook 2005

THE SKETCHBOOKS OF CHARLIE FERGUSON

In the full sweep of Fishers Island’s history, there is no artist more synonymous, more closely associated with Fishers Island than Charles B. “Charlie” Ferguson. The main show features images from two of Charlie's sketchbooks which functioned as illustrated diaries that were filled with daily activities, nature observations, personal notes, and lots of art—drawings, sketches, and watercolors—in various states of completion.
