The Henry L. Ferguson Museum is excited to offer two Seagrass Monitoring Intern positions with the Fishers Island Seagrass Management Coalition (FISMC). This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in marine conservation, data collection, and environmental education while working alongside experienced professionals.
Internship Position: Seagrass Monitoring Intern
Location: Fishers Island, NY
Stipend: $15.00 – $18.00 per hour, 20 hours per week
Duration: Summer Internship (minimum 4 weeks)
About the Organization:
FISMC is a community-based organization on Fishers Island that promotes the importance of seagrass and protects our
fragile marine habitat. We are involved in various projects, including anthropogenic monitoring, water quality
assessments, and eelgrass mapping, all integral to understanding our ecosystem.
Internship Responsibilities:
- Assist the Data and Monitoring Project Coordinator in field data collection activities, including eelgrass sampling,
monitoring water quality, and mapping areas of seagrass. - Help maintain and organize project materials and data logs, ensuring accuracy and accessibility.
- Participate in community outreach events, helping to communicate FISMC’s mission and findings to the public.
- Follow established safety protocols while conducting fieldwork on land and in water.
Qualifications:
- Currently a high school student or recent graduate.
- A strong interest in marine conservation and coastal ecosystems, particularly concerning Long Island Sound and
seagrass habitats. - Capable of working independently and as part of a team, demonstrating a proactive approach to tasks.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and participating in physical activities like
paddleboarding and carrying equipment. - Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage and educate peers and the community.
Work Environment:
▪ The internship will take place primarily on Fishers Island, and applicants must live locally on Fishers Island.
▪ Interns should be prepared for a flexible schedule, including weekends, mornings/evenings for fieldwork.
