3/23/15 After Charlie’s last data file showed that he might be heading back north after a brief trip south in Colombia, we had thought he was going to eventually migrate north via the usual route across that Caribbean. His latest data tracking, however, showed that he turned back around and continued south and then west toward Central America. He had already completed his first migration day, when he left Lake Maria la Baja in Bolivar, Colombia on the 18th. (Day 2 – 3/19) shortly before 8 pm Charlie crossed into Panama and stayed the night in Guna Yala near the northern shoreline. (Day 3 – 3/20) he flew across the Panama Canal and reached Colon for the night. (Day 4 – 3/21) Charlie reacheed the western end of Panama and stayed near the shoreline in Bocas del Toro. (Day 5 – 3/22) he crossed through Costa Rica and reached Rio San Juan Nicaragua. He stayed near Lake Nicaragua for the night (Day 6 – 3/23) and was last tracked continuing north toward Guatemala.

This is not a normal path for an osprey migrating back to the north east. His very circuitous route is puzzling to the ornithologists who are following Charlie’s migration.
