Edwin, the male osprey that we “tagged” from the nest near Beach Pond has a strong proclivity to fish and sleep in Connecticut. In fact, he has only returned once, on the afternoon of June 17th, since May 28th. There are conflicting reports on the female left behind. The nest appears to still be occupied, but it is not clear if Edwin’s ex-mate is with another male, or an entirely new pair has taken over the nest. What is clear is that Edwin has been a dedicated wanderer since he left Fishers Island. The following notes, made by our website designer Beth Jepsen, give a clearer picture of some of his recent travels:

5/28    Morning in Niantic, by 10:30 am in Ledyard – by 12:30 pm on Fishers Island – spends afternoon and evening.

5/29    By 8 am starts heading back to Niantic, spends entire day and evening here in Gardner Lake area.

5/30    By 10 am is heading for Ledyard, stays here and further east to Foxwoods and south to Groton Reservoir all day and night.

5/31    By 4:30 am heads back to Niantic but returns to Groton by 9:30 am, then North to Pachaug Pond around 1 pm, by 2:30 is at Gardner Lake, stays overnight at Barnes Reservoir.

6/1    By 9 am starts to head further west to Hadlyme but back at Gardner Lake around 4 pm and spends the night again.

6/2    Around 11 am heads south between East Lyme and Waterford but by noon heads back to Gardner Lake and spends afternoon between Gardner Lake and Lake Konomoc. Spends night in Niantic at Barnes Reservoir.

6/3    Spends all day and night in Niantic around Lake Konomoc.

6/4    By 8 am heads west to river and spends morning and early afternoon fishing along mouth of river in Niantic and Old Lyme. By 2 pm heads back north in Niantic and spends the afternoon and evening around Lake Konomoc.

6/5    By 7 am heads north and is at Gardner Lake by 9:30 am, then down to Fairy Lake around 11 am, just after 2 pm heads east to Ledyard, then south and is at Groton Reservoir by 3:30 pm where he spends the night.

6/6    Spends all day and night at Groton Reservoir area and just north of it.

6/7    5:30 am heads west back across the Thames to Lake Konomoc by 8 am. Around 3 pm heads north to Gardner Lake and back to Lake Konomoc by 7:30 pm for the night.

6/8    Around 7:30 north to Gardner Lake by 9:30, then to Bozrah/Lebanon by noon. Around 1:30 pm heads west to Naugatuck River briefly and returns to Bozrah/Lebanon by 2:30 pm. Around 4:30 heads south to Lake Konomoc for the night.

6/9    By 9:30 am is back north at Gardner Lake and spends afternoon here and just north. Around 5 pm heads back south to Lake Konomoc for the night.

6/10    By 8:30 am begins to head back north to Gardner Lake and spends the afternoon in that area and by 7 pm is at Mill Pond for the evening.

6/11    By 6 am heads back north to Gardner Lake and by noon goes southeast to Oxoboxo Lake for the afternoon and evening.

6/12    By 6 am heads southwest to Millpond briefly, then by 10 am heads southeast across the Thames to Groton Reservoir  area for the afternoon but  around 5 pm heads back to Lake Konomoc for the night.

6/13    By 7:30 am heads north to Garner and Oxoboxo Lakes for the day and evening.

6/14    By 8 am heads south to Lake Konomoc for the morning and afternoon but heads back north by 5:30 pm to Fairy Lake and Mill Pond and then east to Oxoboxo Lake for the night.

6/15    By 7 am heads north to Gardner Lake for the morning, then around 3:30 briefly heads far west past Burlington in Litchfield County and right back for quick stop at Oxoboxo Lake and then to Lake Konomoc by 3:30 for the evening.

6/16    By 7:30 am heads north to Fairy Lake for the morning but back at Lake Konomoc around 12:30 for the afternoon and evening.

6/17    By 9:30 am heads south to Fishers Island and around 11 am is at Middle Farms Pond, then Island Pond, and around the Island until, but by 4:30 pm heads back north through Groton and west across the Thames River to Lake Konomoc by 6 pm for a brief while, and continues west to Connecticut River in Lyme and then east to Powers Lake by 7:30 pm for the evening.

6/18    By 8 am swings back west to Connecticut River before heading northeast to Gardner Lake by 10 am, then south to Oxoboxo Lake and is at Lake Konomoc by noon and stays for the afternoon and spends the night.

6/19    Around 8:30 am heads east to Groton, spends the morning at Groton Reservoir, Buddington Pond and Warren Millpond before heading back west across the Thames around noon. At Lake Konomoc around 1 pm briefly, then heads north by Bogue Brook Reservoir then to Gardner Lake by 4 pm, where he spends early evening with brief visits to Oxoboxo Lake and Mill Pond before heading to Barnes Reservoir by 10 pm for the night.

6/20    Around 9 am heads north to Gardner Lake, then briefly to Oxoboxo Lake but heads further north to Red Cedar Lake and Savin Lake around 10:30 am. Around noon Edwin appears to shoot up to Massachusetts very briefly to Hamilton Reservoir, then is back in Connecticut at Gardner Lake by 12:15 pm (possible erroneous way point in the data?), then to Oxoboxo Lake and Wheeler Pond before heading west around 1 pm to Barnes Reservoir, and around 4 pm heads south to Lake Konomoc for the evening.

6/21    By 7 am heads north to Gardner Lake briefly, then southeast to Wheeler Pond and the Thames River before heading back northwest with time spent at Scholfield Pond, Oxoboxo Lake and Gardner Lake before noon; makes one more pass southeast but turns west before Wheeler Pond and is at Lake Konomoc by 1 pm; around 3 pm heads west to Powers Lake briefly before heading back north over Fairy Lake and Gardner Lake to Red Cedar Lake by 4 pm but before 5 pm is heading south again to Stony Brook Reservoir, Scholfield Pond, Oxoboxo Lake and Gardner Lake, and by 7:30 is at Oxoboxo Lake for the night.

6/22    By 4:30 am heads first north to Gardner Lake but then south back over Oxoboxo Lake, Scholfield Pond and Wheeler Pond to the Thames River and then west to Lake Konomoc by 10 am to spend a few hours, then heads further north to Barnes Reservoir by 3 pm where he spends the night.

6/23    By 8 am is heading south to Lake Konomoc briefly then around 11 am heads east to Groton Reservoir for a few hours before returning west across the Thames back to Lake Konomoc for the evening.

6/24    Up around 5 am and stays at Lake Konomoc for a couple hours before heading west to Connecticut River, appears to spike far west around 10:30 am past Waterbury to Washington, CT but back at CT River before noon (another possible erroneous way point?), spends rest of afternoon and around 7:30 pm heads east to Powers Lake for the evening.

6/25    By 5:30 am heads west and is at the Connecticut River by 7 am where he spends the day between Lyme and Old Lyme before heading back to Powers Lake for the evening around 8 pm.

6/26    Around 8 am heads east to Lake Konomoc, then Boque Brook Reservoir, then flies by Oxoboxo Lake and Gardner Lake by 10, Fairy Lake around 11 am but is back at Lake Konomoc around 1:30 pm for the afternoon and evening.

6/27    Around 10 am heads north to Gardner Lake where he spends most of the day and heads south to Oxoboxo Lake around 6:30 pm where he spends the night.

6/28    Around 7:45 am heads north to Gardner Lake for a couple hours, then heads west to the Connecticut River in Lyme for the afternoon before heading back east to Lake Konomoc by 6:30 pm and spends the night.

6/29    Spends the day and another night at Lake Konomoc.

6/30    Spends the morning at Lake Konomoc and heads to Davis Pond by 10 am and is there until noon, he then goes back at Lake Konomoc for the afternoon and early evening but returns to Davis Pond for the night by 9 pm

7/1    Around 5:30 am heads to Lake Konomoc briefly, then back to Davis Pond until noon, then back to Lake Konomoc for the afternoon and night.

7/2    Spends the day and another night at Lake Konomoc.

7/3    Spends early morning at Lake Konomoc, by 11 am heads south to Niantic River briefly then spends the afternoon and evening halfway between the Niantic River and Lake Konomoc.

7/4    Around 6:30 am heads south to Niantic River for the morning, then heads north to Lake Konomoc by noon and spends the afternoon and evening.

7/5    Around 8 am heads south to the Niantic River, then west to Connecticut River by 10 am, then east to a small pond in the Norwich Pond area by 1:30 and stays for the afternoon before heading east around 7:30 pm and is at Powers Lake by 8:30 pm for the night.

7/6    Around 6 am heads west to Dodson Pond, then south to Rogers Lake around 8 am very briefly, then north to Norwich Pond area by 9 am for a couple of hours then heads east to Lake Konomoc by noon for a couple of hours and by 3:30 is headed further east to the Thames River in Quaker Hill for the evening before heading north and spends the night in Horton Cove in Montville.

7/7    Around 10 am heads further north on the Thames to Trading Cove but before noon heads west to Wheeler pond, Scholfield Pond, Oxoboxo Lake and Garnder Lake, back to Scholfield Pond, then south to Lake Konomoc by 2 pm and a quick trip to the Niantic River around 3 pm but goes back to Lake Konomoc for the night.

7/8    Spends the entire day and another night at Lake Konomoc.

7/9    Spends the morning at Lake Konomoc but by noon is headed west to the Connecticut River in Lyme where he spends the afternoon and evening and spends the night in Hamburg Cove.

7/10    Spends the morning in Hamburg Cover area of Connecticut River, then heads east before noon and is at Lake Konomoc by 12:30 pm where he spends the afternoon and evening.

7/11    Spends the entire day and another night at Lake Konomoc.

7/12    Spends another day and night at Lake Konomoc.

7/13    Spends a third consecutive day at Lake Konomoc.

7/14    Spends most of the morning at Lake Konomoc before heading southeast around 11 am to the Shaws Cove in New London and turn north up the Thames River, over Smith Cove in Quaker Hill to Horton Cove for a short stay, then heads back west to Lake Konomoc by 2 pm for the rest of the afternoon and night.

7/15    Spends the entire day and night at Lake Konomoc.

7/16    Spends early morning at Lake Konomoc, then around 9:15 am heads south to Niantic River and stays until around 3:30 pm before heading back to Lake Konomoc for the night.

7/17    Spends entire day and night at Lake Konomoc.

7/18    Spends early morning at Lake Konomoc then heads west around 9:30 am and is at the Connecticut River in Lyme before noon, then spends the afternoon and night at Hamburg Cove.

7/19    Spends entire day and another night in Hamburg Cove.

7/20    Spends another day in the Hamburg Cove area of the Connecticut River.

7/21    Spends another day in the Hamburg Cove area of the Connecticut River. (Note: Around 3:30 pm appears to be in Long Island very briefly and back at Hamburg Cove before 4 pm, this may be erroneous way point)

7/22    Spends another day in the Hamburg Cove area of the Connecticut River.

7/23    Spends the morning in the Hamburg Cove area, just after noon heads west along the Connecticut River towards Chester but is back at Hamburg Cove by 2 pm where he spends another night.

7/24    Spends the entire day and night in the Hamburg Cove area of the Connecticut River.

7/25    Spends another day and night in the Hamburg Cove area of the Connecticut River.

7/26    Spends another day and night in the Hamburg Cove area of the Connecticut River.

7/27    Spends another day and night in the Hamburg Cove area of the Connecticut River.

8/9    Spends the day and night in the Hamburg Cove area of the Connecticut River in Lyme.

8/10    Spends another day and night in the Hamburg Cove area of the Connecticut River.

8/11    Spends another day and night in the Hamburg Cove area of the Connecticut River.
